TL;DR – Awesome movie, just what I wanted it to be. Holy crap did they nail this. I am not a huge Ryan Reynolds fan (and frankly he did have a lot to make up for *cough* Green lantern *cough* X-men Origins: Wolverine) but he stepped up and was absolutely perfect for the role. I need to see this movie again as I am pretty sure I missed some of the jokes while I was laughing so hard that I couldn’t breathe properly. Solid 9/10.
Just a little background before we start:
I only became a fan of Deadpool as a character within the last 3 years. I am not a comic book reader and my childhood was a little void of superheroes. However, I have always been a fan of X-men, Batman and the multitudes of Marvel movies that have come out recently. I got into Deadpool purely through the game (released in 2013) which was awesome, and from there researched more about Wade Wilson’s character (as a former WoW player, lore and backstory are my life).
What I love about the character is that he is an anti-hero. IDK I just have a soft spot for anti-heroes. Rules are meant to be broken right? Merc, with a mouth, as he’s known for his witty comments, inability to shut up, and morbid sense of humour. Deadpool is crazy, demented and an extremely entertaining character renown for breaking the ‘fourth wall’.
Side Note: breaking the fourth wall is when the performer acknowledges, speaks directly to or interacts with the audience. In cinema usually looking straight down the camera lens and talking to the viewer.
So back to it.
The opening credits set the tone for the entire movie. If you haven’t seen it, you need to go. Then you will see what I am saying with the opening credits. They are actually gold, especially coming from a film and animation study background. I really enjoyed the pacing and narrative without spoiling too much, (although you’re very late to the party if you haven’t seen it yet), the whole film takes place over a 2 day period, flipping back and forth between flashbacks and the action/revenge plot in the present moment. Overall, really well put together and for the director’s first feature length film the shot choices and cinematography was very well planned (at least for the actions scenes it was epic).
I went in knowing they would, and expecting them to break the fourth wall. Not only did that happen in true Deadpool fashion, but they obliterated it, and the myriad of jokes spawned were hilarious. Every line was on point. Again, I don’t want to spoil any, so just go and see it! I honestly haven’t laughed out loud that much in a film since The Wolf of Wall Street.
Not only did I love Deadpool for its humour, I loved the fact that it completely flipped the super hero genre on its head. We are so used to the family friendly superhero movies of marvel (not that they are bad, they are awesome and if you don’t enjoy them you probably don’t have a soul), it is refreshing to finally have an R rated superhero movie that doesn’t have needless characters thrown in left right and center. The film was so true to the Deadpool character, exactly what a fan would want from the writers.
What I didn’t expect and took me off guard was the romance/love story. How they promoted the film as a love story and even did a spoof valentine’s day romance trailer for people to show their ill-informed significant other and trick them into seeing it. They even referenced this in film during a fourth wall break #OopsSpoilers. The love interest in the film didn’t feel forced or take away from the story, in fact besides a revenge fantasy, Deadpool is actually a love story. One scene in particular resonated with me, Wade Wilson has just met his love interest (Vanessa) and the two of them are flirting with who had the most screwed up childhood – Thanks Deadpool, that is my first date game… there goes my secret play. I will give it to him though, he beats me in screwed up childhood by a long shot.
In conclusion I would recommend/10, I went in with high expectations and a love for the character and I wasn’t disappointed. If you’ve seen it yourself tell me what you thought down below.
As hyped as I am for all the Superhero movies coming out in 2016 it is going to be hard to beat this one. In saying that if Ryan Reynolds can deliver like that I have hope for the Batfleck and Jared’s Joker.
Personally I can’t wait for the sequel.
9/10 would watch again (make that a thousand times again).
